Using Satellite Imagery to Optimize your Census and Downstream Uses for Civil Governments
Monday, November 18, 2019 - 8:30 AM - 12:00 PM
Instructor:

Wendy Jacobs, Senior Manager Channel Enablement

Population censuses are administered by almost every country in the world to count their residents and are a primary source of data for these countries. Census counts provide data on the spatial distribution, age and sex structure, living conditions and other key socioeconomic characteristics of their population. But this data alone is not relevant unless it is associated to a location. And the smaller the level of geography in which the data is generated the better. Statistical data from the census not only supports decision-making around policy-making, planning and administration, but also supports monitoring SDGs.

Challenges facing National Statistical Offices (NSOs) include:
  • Lack of accurate or any maps
  • Not knowing what has changed since the last census
  • High rate of population growth
  • Need to identify all structures where people are living
  • Need to optimize enumeration areas and routings

To support NSOs in their census planning efforts, Maxar has created a set of census solutions that work alone or with GIS platforms to:
  • Improve data quality
  • Reduce per-household cost structure
  • Improve efficiency of creating basemaps, planning Enumeration Areas and conducting fieldwork

In this session you will:
  • Learn how to modernize your census planning and administration efforts by leveraging satellite imagery and information products
  • See demos of these products and understand how they fit into a typical census workflow
  • Learn about additional use cases for these products beyond census, that support Civil Governments
